Launch of SoundCloud

August 2007

SoundCloud is an online audio distribution platform that allows users to upload, share and comment on music and other sound recordings. It was founded in Stockholm by the Swedish sound designer Alexander Ljung and the artist Eric Wahlforss, and soon moved its base to Berlin. A distinctive feature was the waveform display, on which listeners could leave comments at exact moments in a track. The site became a popular place for independent musicians, DJs, podcasters and amateur producers to share their work, and played a role in the rise of the subgenre known as SoundCloud rap. It later added paid subscription plans and artist tools.
