Launch of Al Jazeera

1 November 1996

Al Jazeera is a television news network based in Doha, Qatar, funded by the Qatari ruling family. It began as an Arabic-language channel, built around journalists who had worked for the BBC's Arabic television service before it closed, and it broke the monopoly of state-run media in the Arab world with open debate and on-the-spot reporting. It gained worldwide attention after the September 2001 attacks, when it broadcast statements by Osama bin Laden. An English-language channel followed in 2006. The network has been praised for covering stories others ignore, and criticized by governments in the Middle East and the West, some of which have banned it or its journalists, and for its relationship with Qatar.
