Release of KDE

14 October 1996

KDE is a free software community and the name of its graphical desktop environment for Linux and other Unix-like systems, originally called the K Desktop Environment. It was announced by the German student Matthias Ettrich, who wanted a user-friendly, consistent desktop for Unix, and it was built using the Qt toolkit. This led to a licensing dispute that prompted the creation of the rival GNOME project. Over the years, the community has produced a large set of applications for the web, graphics, education and productivity, along with the Plasma desktop. KDE software is free, and the project is supported by an international team of volunteers and by the non-profit KDE e.V.
