Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan

from 27 September 1996 to 17 December 2001

The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan was the government of the Taliban, which captured Kabul after years of civil war following the Soviet withdrawal and the fall of the communist government. Its leader was Mullah Mohammed Omar, with the title Amir al-Mu'minin. The regime imposed a very strict interpretation of Islamic law, banning girls' education, restricting women from working and public life, outlawing music and television, and carrying out public punishments. It was recognised by only three countries, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. It sheltered al-Qaeda, and in 2001 destroyed the giant Buddhas of Bamiyan. After the September 11 attacks, a US-led invasion toppled the Taliban government.
