Khanate of Qazan

from 1438 to 1552

The Khanate of Kazan was a Tatar state on the middle Volga, formed after the breakup of the Golden Horde and traditionally founded by Ulugh Muhammad, with Kazan as its capital. Its population included Volga Tatars, Chuvash, Mari and Udmurts, and it controlled trade along the river. It was often in conflict with Moscow, and its throne was repeatedly contested, with Moscow sometimes installing its own candidates. Tsar Ivan IV, known as the Terrible, took Kazan after a siege in which his engineers blew up part of the walls with mines. The conquest opened the way for Russian expansion east toward the Urals and Siberia, and Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow was built in commemoration. Kazan Tatars were subjected to pressure to convert, and Kazan is now the capital of Tatarstan.
