Chișinău, now the capital and largest city of Moldova, is first mentioned in a document of 1436, in a charter issued by the princes of Moldavia, which refers to a village near a spring on the river Bîc. It remained a small settlement and monastery estate for centuries within the Principality of Moldavia. After the Russian Empire annexed the region of Bessarabia in 1812, it was made the provincial capital and grew into a town with a planned grid of streets. It was Romanian in the interwar years and in 1940 it became the capital of the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic. Moldova became independent in 1991.
