The Ferapontov Monastery is a Russian Orthodox monastery in the Vologda region of northern Russia, founded by the monk Ferapont, a disciple of Saint Cyril of Beloozero. It stands in a remote landscape of lakes and forests. The monastery is best known for the frescoes in its Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin, painted by the icon painter Dionisius and his assistants, which are among the finest works of Russian medieval art and the only major cycle by him to survive intact. They are marked by luminous colours and elongated figures. The monastery was closed in the Soviet period and later became a museum, and UNESCO placed it on the World Heritage List in 2000.
