Death of Theodore Roosevelt

6 January 1919

Theodore Roosevelt died on 6 January 1919 in Sagamore Hill, aged 60. The 26th President of the United States, Roosevelt was a New Yorker who became a national hero for leading the Rough Riders in the Spanish-American War. He became president in 1901 after the assassination of William McKinley, and he was re-elected in 1904. His Square Deal programme brought action against monopolies, consumer protection laws and the protection of millions of acres of public land as national forests, monuments and parks. He oversaw the start of the Panama Canal and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906 for mediating the end of the Russo-Japanese War. After leaving office he ran again in 1912 for the Progressive, or Bull Moose, Party.
