Husayn ibn Ali was born on 9 January 626 CE in Medina. The grandson of the Prophet Muhammad and the son of Ali and Fatima, Husayn is revered by Muslims, and especially Shia Muslims, who regard him as the third imam. After the death of the caliph Muawiya, he refused to pledge allegiance to his son Yazid, whom he considered illegitimate, and set out for Kufa in Iraq, where supporters had invited him. He and a small band of followers and family members were intercepted by Umayyad forces at Karbala and killed. The event is commemorated every year on Ashura, and became a central symbol of sacrifice and resistance to injustice.
