The French Second Republic was established after a popular uprising in Paris overthrew King Louis-Philippe, and it introduced universal male suffrage, expanding the electorate to millions of men. Its early months saw the creation of national workshops for the unemployed, and the bloody June Days uprising of the Paris workers, which was crushed by General Cavaignac. A new constitution created a strong presidency, and in the election at the end of 1848 Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte, a nephew of Napoleon I, won an overwhelming victory. Unable to run again under the constitution, he staged a coup d'état in December 1851, and a year later proclaimed himself Emperor Napoleon III, which ended the republic and began the Second Empire.
