The Hungarian Revolution of 1848 began in March in Pest, when students and writers, among them the poet Sándor Petőfi, issued twelve demands including freedom of the press and an independent government. Under the leadership of Lajos Kossuth the Hungarian parliament passed the April Laws, which abolished serfdom and created a separate responsible ministry. The Habsburg court then tried to reverse these changes, leading to war between Austria and Hungary. The Hungarian army won victories in the spring of 1849, and independence was declared, but Russia sent a large army to help Austria. The revolution ended in August 1849 at Világos, and harsh reprisals followed, including executions of generals.
