Percy Bysshe Shelley was born on 4 August 1792 in Horsham. An English Romantic poet, Shelley was one of the major lyric poets in the language. Expelled from Oxford for a pamphlet on atheism, he lived much of his short life in Italy with his second wife, Mary Shelley, and in a circle that included Lord Byron and John Keats. His works include the long poem Queen Mab, Ozymandias, Ode to the West Wind, To a Skylark, the verse drama Prometheus Unbound and the elegy Adonais, written on the death of Keats. A radical in politics and a vegetarian, he was little appreciated during his life. He drowned in a boating accident off the coast of Italy.
