The French First Republic was the government of France established by the National Convention after the monarchy was abolished during the French Revolution. Louis XVI was tried and guillotined in January 1793, and France was at war with most of the monarchies of Europe. The Reign of Terror followed under the Committee of Public Safety and Maximilien Robespierre, ending with his fall in 1794, after which a five-man Directory governed from 1795. The republic abolished feudal privileges, adopted the metric system and introduced a new revolutionary calendar. Napoleon Bonaparte seized power in the coup of 18 Brumaire in 1799 as First Consul, and in 1804 he proclaimed himself emperor, ending the republic.
