Founding of Krasnodar

1793

Krasnodar is a city in southern Russia on the Kuban River and the capital of Krasnodar Krai. It was founded as Yekaterinodar, meaning Catherine's gift, by the Black Sea Cossacks, who had been settled in the region by Catherine the Great as a frontier force. It became the center of the Kuban Cossacks. During the Russian Civil War it served as a base for the anti-Bolshevik Volunteer Army, whose first commander, General Kornilov, was killed in the fighting nearby in 1918. It was renamed Krasnodar in 1920. The city was occupied by Germany in 1942 and 1943 and suffered heavy damage. Today it is a major center of agriculture, food processing and retail in southern Russia.
