Founding of World Tennis

1 March 1912

The international governing body of tennis, long known as the International Tennis Federation, or ITF, was founded in 1912 as the International Lawn Tennis Federation by national associations from twelve countries. It is based in London and regulates the rules of the game, as well as running the Davis Cup, the main men's team competition, and the women's equivalent, now called the Billie Jean King Cup. It oversees the four Grand Slam tournaments in terms of rules and keeps the world junior and wheelchair tennis circuits. The word lawn was dropped from the name in the 1970s. Its national members include associations from most countries of the world.
