Founding of Universal Pictures

30 April 1912

Universal Pictures is an American film studio, founded by Carl Laemmle together with several partners who merged a number of smaller film companies. It built a large studio complex, Universal City, in California in the 1910s, and it became known in the 1930s for its horror films, including Dracula and Frankenstein, which created the image of the classic movie monsters. Later successes included Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, the Jaws films of Steven Spielberg and the Jurassic Park series. The company changed hands several times and is now part of NBCUniversal, owned by Comcast. It is among the oldest film studios in the world still in operation, and has theme parks bearing its name.
