World Athletics is the international governing body for track and field, road running, race walking and related sports. It was founded in Stockholm in July 1912, during the Olympic Games, as the International Amateur Athletic Federation, with representatives from 17 national federations. The organization defines the rules of the sport, keeps world records and organizes the World Athletics Championships, which were first held in 1983. It dropped the word amateur from its name in 2001 and adopted the name World Athletics in 2019. The federation is headquartered in Monaco and has faced challenges over doping, especially in Russia, and over eligibility rules in women's events.
