Founding of Paramount Pictures

8 May 1912

Paramount Pictures is an American film studio, regarded as the oldest surviving major film studio in Hollywood. It traces its origin to the Famous Players Film Company, formed by Adolph Zukor, who produced feature-length films with stars of the stage, and which later merged with the Jesse Lasky Feature Play Company. Paramount became a distributor in 1914 and was soon one of the biggest studios, with silent-era stars such as Mary Pickford and Rudolph Valentino. It later released classics such as Sunset Boulevard, The Godfather and Titanic, and it also owned television operations. Its logo, a mountain ringed by stars, is among the best known in cinema. The studio is based in Hollywood, at Melrose Avenue.
