Former leader of East Germany, General Secretary of the Socialist Unity Party (1976-1989). Erich Honecker was born on 25 August 1912 in what is now Germany. Erich Honecker is remembered as a politician, autobiographer and resistance fighter, a citizen of Territory of the Saar Basin and East Germany. Positions held included member of the Volkskammer and the Chairman of the State Council.
