Founding of World Air Sports Federation

14 October 1905

The World Air Sports Federation, known by its French initials FAI, is the international governing body for air sports and aeronautical records, founded in Paris by representatives of several countries. In its early years, it dealt with ballooning and the early aeroplanes, and it certified the world records of early aviators. It now covers a wide range of activities, including gliding, parachuting, hang gliding, model aircraft, drones and spaceflight records, and it sets rules for competitions and records. Its approval is needed for a record to be official, and it maintains the Karman line of 100 kilometres as its definition of the boundary of space. It is based in Lausanne, Switzerland.
