Greta Garbo was born on 18 September 1905 in Katarina church parish. A Swedish-born actress, Garbo became one of the great stars of Hollywood in the late silent and early sound era. Discovered by the director Mauritz Stiller, she came to the United States and appeared in films such as Flesh and the Devil, Queen Christina, Anna Karenina, Grand Hotel and Ninotchka, in which she famously laughed on screen. Her beauty and air of mystery made her a legend. She retired from films in 1941 at the age of thirty-five and spent the rest of her life avoiding publicity, living quietly in New York, which only added to her mystique.
