Founding of Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C.

1877

Wolverhampton Wanderers is an English football club based in Wolverhampton in the West Midlands, which began as a school team of St Luke's Church in Blakenhall. It was one of the twelve founding clubs of the Football League in 1888. Under the manager Stan Cullis, the club became the best in England in the 1950s, winning three league titles, in 1954, 1958 and 1959, and the FA Cup in 1949 and 1960. Its floodlit friendly matches against foreign teams such as Honved and Spartak Moscow helped inspire the creation of the European Cup. Wolves have played at Molineux since 1889, and in recent years have been mostly in the Premier League. The team is nicknamed Wolves and plays in old gold and black.
