Publication of Anna Karenina

1877

Anna Karenina is a novel by the Russian writer Leo Tolstoy, serialized in the magazine The Russian Messenger from 1875 to 1877 and published as a book soon after. It follows Anna, a married aristocrat in St. Petersburg, who begins an affair with Count Vronsky and is gradually shut out by society, interwoven with the story of the landowner Levin, whose search for meaning and a good marriage echoes Tolstoy's own concerns. The book explores family, fidelity, social convention and the life of the Russian countryside. Its famous opening line says that happy families are all alike. It is regarded as one of the greatest novels ever written, and it has been adapted many times for the stage, film and television.
