Discovery of the Gospel of Thomas

December 1945

The Gospel of Thomas is an early Christian text made up of 114 sayings attributed to Jesus, with no narrative of his birth, death or resurrection. The complete text survives in a Coptic translation found in 1945 among the Nag Hammadi codices in Egypt, and some Greek fragments of it had earlier been discovered at Oxyrhynchus. The original is generally thought to have been composed in the first or second century, but scholars disagree over its date, its place of origin and its relation to the gospels of the New Testament. Some see it as reflecting a Gnostic outlook, while others regard it as preserving independent early traditions. It was not included in the Christian biblical canon.
