Founding of UN Women

2 July 2010

UN Women is the United Nations body for gender equality and the empowerment of women, established by a resolution of the General Assembly. It merged four earlier UN offices that dealt with women's issues into a single agency in order to give the cause more weight, funding and coordination. The former president of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, was its first head. Based in New York, it supports governments in drafting laws and policies, promotes women's political participation and economic opportunity, and works on ending violence against women. It also monitors how states and the UN system are meeting their commitments on gender equality.
