2010 Copiapó mining accident

5 August 2010

The 2010 Copiapo mining accident began when part of the San Jose copper and gold mine in the Atacama desert in northern Chile collapsed, trapping thirty-three miners deep underground. For seventeen days, nothing was known of their fate, until a probe drilled to their shelter came up with a note saying they were all alive. Rescuers then kept them supplied through narrow shafts while they drilled a larger escape tunnel. After a total of sixty-nine days, the miners were brought to the surface one by one in a capsule called Phoenix, in an operation watched by a global television audience. The rescue was seen as a triumph of engineering and of the miners' discipline, and it raised questions about mine safety in Chile.
