Rabindranath Tagore was born on 7 May 1861 in Kolkata. A Bengali poet, writer, composer and painter, Tagore was a leading figure of the cultural revival in Bengal and across India. His collection of poems Gitanjali brought him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913, making him the first non-European to receive it. He wrote novels, short stories, plays and songs, and the music and lyrics for the national anthems of both India and Bangladesh. He founded the school at Santiniketan, which became the Visva-Bharati University, with ideas of education in natural surroundings. In 1919, after the Amritsar massacre, he renounced the knighthood he had been given.
