Tesla was founded in July 2003 in San Carlos, California, by the engineers Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, who wanted to show that electric cars could be desirable and practical. It was named after the inventor Nikola Tesla. Elon Musk joined in 2004 as an investor and chairman, and later became chief executive. The company's first car was the Roadster, a sports car launched in 2008, followed by the Model S sedan in 2012 and the more affordable Model 3 in 2017. Tesla became one of the most valuable carmakers in the world and also sells solar panels and battery storage.
