The Swiss Stock Exchange, today operated by SIX Group and based in Zurich, is Switzerland's main market for trading shares and bonds. It developed from separate regional exchanges in cities such as Zurich, Basel and Geneva, which were later merged into a single national electronic exchange. Switzerland's long tradition as a banking center, and the size of companies such as Nestlé, Novartis and Roche, make it one of the more important stock exchanges in Europe, and the main index, the Swiss Market Index, is made up of the largest companies.
