On 30 November 1872 at the West of Scotland Cricket Club ground at Partick, Glasgow, Scotland and England played the first official international football match, in front of about 4,000 spectators. The match ended 0-0. The Scottish team, mostly from the club Queen's Park, played with a 2-2-6 formation, passing the ball, while the English side preferred dribbling. Earlier, in 1870, unofficial matches had been played between English and Scottish players living in London. The fixture has been played almost every year since, and is the oldest international in football. The next one in 1873 was won by England 4-2.
