Napoleon III died on 9 January 1873 in Chislehurst, aged 64. A French ruler, Napoleon III was the nephew of Napoleon I. After failed coup attempts in the 1830s and a period of imprisonment and exile, he returned to France after the 1848 revolution and was elected president of the Second Republic. In December 1851 he seized power in a coup and in 1852 proclaimed himself emperor. His reign, the Second Empire, brought rapid industrialization, railway building and the rebuilding of Paris under Baron Haussmann, as well as military ventures in the Crimea, Italy and Mexico. He was captured by the Prussians at Sedan in September 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War, which ended his rule. He died in exile in England.
