Construction of Zayed International Airport

1982

Zayed International Airport is the main airport serving Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, located on the mainland east of the city. It opened in the early 1980s as Abu Dhabi International Airport, as the emirate used its oil revenues to build modern infrastructure, and it is the home base of the national airline, Etihad Airways. In 2023 it was renamed in honour of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding president of the country, and a vast new terminal building was opened. The airport has been repeatedly expanded to handle the rapid growth of air traffic in the Gulf, where Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Doha compete as transfer hubs between Europe, Asia and Africa.
