Narodowy Bank Polski, the National Bank of Poland, is the country's central bank, with its headquarters in Warsaw. It was created by the provisional authorities in the final months of the Second World War, as the old financial institutions had been destroyed or taken over by Germany, and it became the state's central bank in communist Poland. In the market economy after 1989, it was reorganized and gained independence, and it is responsible for issuing the złoty and for monetary policy, with the aim of keeping prices stable. It also supervises parts of the banking system and holds Poland's gold and foreign currency reserves. Poland is a member of the European Union but has not adopted the euro.
