Founding of Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations

1 February 1945

The Food and Agriculture Organization is a specialised agency of the United Nations that leads international efforts to defeat hunger and improve nutrition and agricultural productivity. It was founded at a conference in Quebec City in 1945, as the world faced postwar food shortages, with the Scottish nutritionist John Boyd Orr as its first director general. Its headquarters moved to Rome in 1951. The agency collects global agricultural statistics, works with governments on farming, fisheries and forestry, and together with the World Health Organization runs the Codex Alimentarius, which sets international food standards. It also coordinated the campaign that led to the eradication of the cattle disease rinderpest, declared in 2011.
