The Crimean Astrophysical Observatory is an astronomical research institution located near the village of Nauchny in the mountains of Crimea. It was set up after the Second World War, and it also took over the work of the earlier Simeiz Observatory on the Crimean coast. Its large reflector telescope, named after the astronomer Grigory Shajn, was for a time one of the biggest in Europe. The observatory has studied the Sun, stars, galaxies and active galactic nuclei, and it has contributed to the discovery of asteroids and comets. Since 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea, which Ukraine and most countries do not recognize, its status has been the subject of dispute.
