Death of Anne Frank

February 1945

Anne Frank died in February 1945 in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, aged about 15. A German-born Jewish girl who grew up in Amsterdam, Anne Frank is known for the diary she kept while hiding from the Nazis. Her family had fled from Germany to the Netherlands in 1934, and in July 1942 they went into hiding in a concealed annex above her father's business, together with four other people. She wrote about her fears, her hopes and her growing maturity in a diary she had received for her thirteenth birthday. In August 1944 they were betrayed and arrested, and she died of typhus in the Bergen-Belsen camp. Her father, the only survivor, published the diary in 1947, and it has since become one of the most widely read books about the Holocaust.
