Founding of Manchester City F.C.

16 April 1894

Manchester City Football Club was given its present name in 1894, after developing from earlier clubs in east Manchester, including St Mark's (West Gorton) and Ardwick. It won its first major honours in the early twentieth century and spent decades as one of England's solid, but not dominant, sides, playing at Maine Road before moving to the City of Manchester Stadium, now the Etihad Stadium, in 2003. A takeover by the Abu Dhabi United Group in 2008 brought huge investment, and the club became a leading force under managers such as Roberto Mancini and Pep Guardiola. In 2023 it won the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Champions League in the same season. The club has also faced long-running disputes over alleged financial rule breaches.
