Edward VIII was born on 23 June 1894 in White Lodge. King of the United Kingdom and Emperor of India for less than a year in 1936, Edward VIII was the eldest son of George V. Popular as Prince of Wales and a fashion leader, he created a constitutional crisis when he insisted on marrying Wallis Simpson, an American divorcee, which the government and the Church of England would not accept. He abdicated in December 1936, the only British monarch to do so voluntarily, and was succeeded by his brother George VI. Made Duke of Windsor, he lived mostly in France, and his visit to Nazi Germany in 1937 and his later views remain controversial.
