Construction of Zurich Airport

1953

Zurich Airport, at Kloten north of the city, is the largest international airport in Switzerland. It was built in the years after the Second World War, when air traffic began to grow quickly, and replaced the smaller airfield at Dübendorf as the city's main airport. Its terminals and runways have been expanded repeatedly, and today it serves as the main hub of Swiss International Air Lines. The airport was long associated with the airline Swissair, which collapsed in 2001. It is directly connected to the Swiss railway network, with a station under the terminal.
