Eurostat is the statistical office of the European Union, based in Luxembourg, and it supplies the Union with statistics at a European level and allows comparison between countries and regions. It began as a small service of the European Coal and Steel Community, and it grew with the creation of the European Economic Community and the Union's expansion. Eurostat does not collect most data itself, but compiles and harmonises the figures supplied by national statistical institutes. Its data cover areas including population, trade, prices, employment and the economy, and it publishes key indicators such as inflation and unemployment rates for the euro area.
