Founding of Interparliamentary Union

1889

The Inter-Parliamentary Union is the international organisation of national parliaments, and it is the oldest permanent forum for political multilateral negotiations. It was founded in Paris by the French politician Frederic Passy and the British parliamentarian William Randal Cremer, both of whom were later awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, as an effort to promote arbitration in place of war. It brings together lawmakers from most parliaments in the world, promotes democracy, human rights and cooperation between parliaments, and has observer status at the United Nations. Its headquarters are in Geneva, Switzerland.
