Founding of Genoa CFC

7 September 1893

Genoa Cricket and Football Club is the oldest active football club in Italy, formed by British residents in the port city of Genoa, initially mainly for cricket, and only later taking up football. It was the dominant side in the early years of Italian football, winning the first national championships, and nine titles in total before the Second World War, the last of which came in 1924. The club has never again reached those heights, but it remains much loved, and it plays in red and blue at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, which it shares with its city rival, Sampdoria. It won the Coppa Italia in 1937 and has also played in Serie B.
