Joan Miró was born on 20 April 1893 in Barcelona. A Spanish painter, sculptor and ceramicist, Miro was born in Barcelona and became one of the major figures of Surrealism, though he always kept his independence from the movement. His works are characterized by bright colors, playful forms and a personal vocabulary of stars, eyes, birds and women drawn with simple lines, as in The Farm, Harlequin's Carnival and the Constellations series. He lived for a time in Paris and then in Mallorca. His murals, ceramics and sculptures can be seen in public places around the world, and the Fundacio Joan Miro in Barcelona is dedicated to his work.
