Founding of FC Bayern Munich

27 February 1900

FC Bayern Munich was founded in February 1900 by a group of football enthusiasts led by Franz John, who had left a gymnastics club in Munich. For its first decades it was a local team without national success, and it won its first German championship in 1932. After becoming a founding member of the Bundesliga in 1965, it grew into the country's dominant club, led by players such as Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Müller and Sepp Maier. The club won the European Cup three times in a row in the mid-1970s and has won the Champions League several times since. It has played at the Allianz Arena since 2005 and has won more German league titles than any other club.
