Founding of AFC Ajax

18 March 1900

AFC Ajax was founded in Amsterdam in March 1900 by a group of young men led by Floris Stempel, and named after the Greek hero Ajax. The club became the dominant force in Dutch football, and in the 1960s and 1970s its team, led by Johan Cruyff and coached by Rinus Michels, played a style called Total Football in which players switched positions fluidly. Ajax won the European Cup in 1971, 1972 and 1973, and again the Champions League in 1995. It is also known for its youth academy, De Toekomst, which has produced many leading players. Since 1996 it has played at the stadium now named after Johan Cruyff.
