Founding of Union Cycliste Internationale

14 April 1900

The Union Cycliste Internationale is the world governing body of cycle sport, founded in Paris by national federations from several countries, among them France, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland and the United States. It was created to set common rules at a time when cycling races were growing quickly in popularity. Today it is based in Aigle in Switzerland and oversees road cycling, track cycling, mountain biking, BMX and other disciplines, and it organizes the world championships and cycling at the Olympic Games. It also runs the professional road calendar known as the WorldTour. The UCI has faced criticism over doping scandals in the sport, which led to reforms and stronger anti-doping measures.
