Carme is an irregular outer moon of Jupiter, discovered in July 1938 by Seth Nicholson at the Mount Wilson Observatory in California. It orbits far from the planet on a tilted path in the retrograde direction, and it is the largest member and namesake of the Carme group, whose members share similar orbits and are thought to be fragments of a single captured body. Carme is about 46 kilometres across and has a reddish colour. It was known as Jupiter XI until 1975, when it was named after a figure of Greek mythology who was loved by Zeus and was the mother of Britomartis.
