Founding of Duke University

1838

Duke University is a private research university in Durham, North Carolina. Its origins lie in a small school in Randolph County started by Methodists and Quakers, which later became Union Institute, Normal College and then Trinity College, and moved to Durham in 1892 with the support of local benefactors such as Julian Carr and the tobacco magnate Washington Duke. In 1924 a large endowment from his son James B. Duke led to the renaming of the institution as Duke University. Its Gothic chapel is a landmark of the campus, and its medical center and law school are among the best known in the country. The Duke Blue Devils basketball team, coached for decades by Mike Krzyzewski, has won multiple national championships.
