Founding of Club Social y Deportivo Colo-Colo

19 April 1925

Colo-Colo is a Chilean football club based in Santiago, the most successful in the country, with the largest number of league titles. It was founded by a group of players who had left the Magallanes club, led by David Arellano, a charismatic player and leader who died in 1927 after an injury on a tour of Spain. The name honors Colo-Colo, a Mapuche chief remembered for resisting the Spanish conquest. In 1991 the club won the Copa Libertadores, the first Chilean team to do so, and then lost the Intercontinental Cup to Red Star Belgrade. Its home is the Estadio Monumental David Arellano, and its rivalry with Universidad de Chile is known as the Superclásico.
