Construction of Copenhagen Airport

20 April 1925

Copenhagen Airport, also called Kastrup after the district in which it lies, is the main international airport of Denmark. It opened in the mid-1920s on the island of Amager, making it one of the oldest international airports in Europe still in operation on its original site. Over the decades it grew from a simple airfield into a major hub for the Nordic countries, with a new terminal complex added in later years. Since the opening of the Oresund Bridge in 2000, it has also been directly linked by rail to southern Sweden and the city of Malmo. It is the home base of Scandinavian Airlines and handles tens of millions of passengers in a typical year.
